Kenya & Tanzania Safari with Zanzibar (Camping), 20 days

We start the journey in the impressive Kenya, where we visit Nairobi, Mount Kenya, the Samburu National Park and the Nyahururu Waterfall. The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania can not be missed during the trip. This park is known for its density of game and has a beautiful nature. The island of Zanzibar is our last stop for this trip. Zanzibar has white beaches, a clear blue sea and palm trees, which contrasts with the savannas and wildlife parks in Kenya and Tanzania. Plan ahead if you want to see the Great Migration!

Join our international groups with active travelers, of all ages. Most will be coming from Holland and Belgium. You will find almost all have a superb command of English, and the guide addresses the group in both Dutch and English.

Day by day

Mount Kenya & Samburu National Park

Day 1 (Travel day)
Day 2  Meet group at Nairobi  airport 2:30 AM  - Mount Kenya
Day 3 Mount Kenya - Samburu NP
Day 4 Samburu NP - Nyahururu Waterfall
Day 5 Nyahururu Waterfall - Lake Nakuru NP

Our journey begins in the capital of Kenya, Nairobi. The Dutch participants will arrive early in the A.M.  You will need to meet them at the airport so you can join for the transfer to Mt. Kenya.  Otherwise, you would need to plan for your own transfer.

Nairobvi owes its name to the language of the Masai and is derived from the term Ewaso Nyirobi, which means cool waters. After breakfast we drive to Mount Kenya with our safari truck . This extinct volcano, except for Kilimanjaro, is the highest mountain in Africa and is covered with eternal snow. In the afternoon we make a nice walk on the flanks of the mountain. Horses can also be rented here.

On day three we enter the first national park of this trip: Samburu. The name Samburu comes from the eponymous tribe that lives in the park. Next to the Ewaso - Nyiro River we set up the tents, after which the first encounters with the game can begin. Because the Samburu is a dry area, the river is very important for both the Samburu tribe and the wildlife that lives there. There is a good chance that wild animals will be drinking next to your tent in the evening. You will probably also encounter the special gérar or giraffe gazelle and the Grévy zebra. The park also has a healthy population of big cats..

After the Samburu National Park a visit to the Nyahururu waterfall is on the program. These are located at the eponymous highest place in Kenya. The water is pouring down about 75 meters. On day five we continue our journey to the second national park of the trip: Nakuru. In the park there is a lake, known for the many flamingos and pelicans that live there. Nakuru is also one of the first national parks in Kenya that has started a comprehensive rhinoceros protection program, so that more than a hundred rhinos now regard this park as their territory.

Lake Baringo

Day 6: Nakuru NP - Baringo Lake
Day 7: Baringo Lake - Kericho
Day 8: Kericho - Musoma (Lake Victoria)

We continue our journey to the next lake in the valley of the great Slenke: Lake Baringo. Because this lake consists of fresh water, you will find many different animal species. There are many different species of birds such as ospreys, pelicans, cormorants and herons. You will also find hippos and crocodiles. In Baringo you can possibly make an (optional) boat trip on the freshwater lake of the same name. Bird lovers can indulge themselves here because there are no fewer than 450 bird species.

We store our tents at Kericho which is known for the tea that is produced and which is also available in the Netherlands and in Belgium. The soil and climate are ideal here for growing tea bushes.

We continue our way to Lake Victoria. The name 'Victoria' comes from the English queen Queen Victoria. In the time she ruled, an Englishman discovered the lake and named it after her. It is the largest lake in Africa and is about twice as large as the Netherlands. We camp on the shores of the lake. A must is a bike ride in the area. We can also take a boat out and visit nearby fishing villages.

Serengeti National Park

Day 9: Musoma
Day 10: Musoma - Serengeti National Park
Day 11: Serengeti NP
Day 12: Serengeti - Ngorongoro

The Serengeti national park is ideal for a safari. The park is known for its density of game. Nature is also beautiful. The park accommodates open grass plains, rockeries, savanna and wooded areas. In the Serengeti live large herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles. You also have a chance to meet with lions, cheetahs and leopards. Of course we take the time for game drives and sleep two nights in the park between the game.

Ngorongoro crater Tanzania buffalo DjoserA visit to the Ngorongoro crater can not be missed in Tanzania. This crater originated after the demolition of a volcano. With jeeps we drive over the narrow steep roads into the crater. Among them are giraffes, black rhinos, lions, hyenas, elephants and hippos. The crater has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. You have a chance to see the Big Five .

Mto Wa Mbu

Day 13: Ngorongoro - Mto Wa Mbu
Day 14: Mto Wa Mbu - Arusha

On our way to Mto Wa Mbu we visit the Kraterhooglands. This area consists of numerous craters, of which the Ngorongoro is one of them. We take a walk to the edge of one of the volcanoes to enjoy the view. In the village of Mto Wa Mbuyou can see how banana beer is brewed. The village is located in a beautiful area. A walk or a bike ride is a good way to explore nature.

From Mto Wa Mbu we drive back towards the civilized world, where we will spend the night in the lively place Arusha. In the afternoon you have plenty of time to explore the city and maybe have some nice souvenirs on the head.

Usambara Mountain

Day 15: Arusha - Usambara Mountain (Lushoto)
Day 16: Usambara Mountain - Dar es Salaam - ferry to Zanzibar (Stonetown)

From Arusha we drive to the Usambara mountain. The mountain consists of two parts and there are several tribes, including the Sambaa, the Kilindi and the Zigua. The two parts are split by a valley. The western part is more accessible and suitable for walking tours. We stay in the village of Lushoto, which lies in the valley on the western side. From our camping pitches it is possible to explore the area on foot. On day 16 we drive to Dar es Salaam, where in the afternoon we board the ferry to Zanzibar.

Day 17: Zanzibar (Stonetown)
Day 18: Zanzibar (beach)
Day 19: Zanzibar (beach)
Day 20: Zanzibar (beach)
Day 21: Zanzibar

The island of Zanzibar is our last stop for this trip. The island is a completely different world than the mainland of Africa. Zanzibar has white beaches, a clear blue sea and palm trees, which contrasts with the savannas and wildlife parks in Kenya and Tanzania. The first day we stay close to the capital of Zanzibar, Stonetown. This capital breathes the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. You can wander for hours in the narrow streets with cobblestones. The hotel is located approximately 10 minutes walking distance from the center of Stonetown. Here we stay 2 nights, so we have enough time to explore the capital.

The last three days we stay in a resort located on the beach of Kendwa beach on the northern side of Zanzibar, near the tourist town of Nungwi. Here you can recover from all the impressions you have gained during this trip. You can also explore the island further. You can visit the herb plantations and discover the underwater world by snorkeling or diving. These excursions are optional.

You can arrange your return  flight to depart from Zanzibar, or you can catch a ferry to Dar Es Salaam where you can fly out (flights are cheaper from Dar). If booking from Dar, plan for a flight that leaves in the afternoon or evening.
