Iceland Winter Tour, 7 days

Get acquainted with the rugged landscape with its geysers, waterfalls, lava fields and hot springs. We visit the small-scale Laugarvatn Fontana, which is located on Lake Laugarvatn and where you can relax. Of course we go to the national park Thingvellir, literally 'the plain of parliament'. This park has been on the Unesco World Heritage List for a number of years. The impressive glacial lake Jökullsarlón should not be missed during the trip. Here, pieces of ice float around, which have descended from the twenty-kilometer-wide Breidamerkurjokull glacier and are drained to the sea.

Join our active, international groups of all ages. Most come from the Netherlands and Belgium (and they speak great English). Our guide addresses the group in Dutch and English.

Golden Circle & Fontana Laugarvatn

Day 1 Reykjavik - Selfoss
Day 2 Selfoss, visit Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss waterfall and optional excursion Laugarvatn Fontana

Upon arrival at Reykjavik Airport, you will meet the group and tour leader at the first hotel. The tour leader will organize a Welcome Meeting to introduce the group and to go over the schedule for the upcoming days.

rThe next day we visit the Thingvellir National Park literally 'the plain of parliament'. The park has been on the Unesco World Heritage List for a number of years. In this fascinating environment of lava fields, jagged rock formations and mountains, the most famous gorge of the island, Almannagjá, is created by the floating of the American and European tectonic plates. In the chasm, the parliament met once and was gathered in the open, speaking right and exchanging news. Thingvellir is still the national symbol of Icelandic identity and independence.

We travel further inland and follow the famous Golden Circle route. Geysir, the world's most famous hot spring, is located in a geothermal area. Geysir erupts only a few times a day, but this area has more bubbling pools and hot springs. One is the very active geyser Strokkur , who shows his skills every ten minutes. This provides an impressive spectacle. Further on, the waterfall Gullfoss impresses by plunging down in two stages in a narrow gorge. In the winter the waterfall is partly frozen and provides a very photogenic picture.

Then we drive to Laugarvatn. Whoever wants to can relax here in the cozy Laugarvatn Fontana where since 1929 Icelanders from the neighborhood have been bathing. The nice geothermal bath is fed by natural hot springs. It lies on the Laugarvatn lake where you can swim to cool off from your visit to the sauna or steam bath. This steam bath is heated by warm steam that comes straight from the earth via a grid. You can also eat here.

Skogafoss - Kirkjubæjarklausturi

Day 3 Selfoss - Seljalandsfoss - Skogafoss - Kirkjubæjarklausturi

The next day we drive east, to the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. The latter is about 60 meters high. Both waterfalls flow over what once were the cliffs of the Icelandic coastline. Along the way we pass the active volcano Eyjafjallajokull and enjoy a beautiful view of one of the huge ice caps of the Myrdalsjökull.

In Skogar you can visit the ethnological museum or take part in a spectacular optional walk on the Solheimajokull glacier. Armed with crampons, ice ax and helmet you walk safely and under the guidance of a guide on the ice. A very special experience!

Glacial lake Jökulsárlón - Northernlights

Day 4 Kirkjubæjarklausturi, Fjardargljufur - glacial lake Jökulsárlón - Öræfi
Day 5 Öræfi- Skaftafell NP - Kirkjubæjarklausturi

From Kirkjubæjarklausturi we drive to the beautiful Fjardrargljufur, where we take a walk, subject to weather conditions (not possible in December and January). The kilometers long gap has been eroded by the river Fjarda. Then we drive to the impressive glacial lake Jökullsarlón .

Here ice pieces float around, which have been torn down from the twenty kilometer wide Breidamerkurjokull glacier and are being drained to the sea. We walk along the shore of the lake and spend the night near the national park Skaftafell .

Thhis park is popular with Icelanders who live in the capital. Mountains, deep canyons glaciers and clear streams determine the landscape here. The most beautiful waterfall in the park, the Svartifoss, plunges into the deep from a wall of basalt blocks. In winter, her frozen state is a fairytale look.

This is also the best place to see the northern lights, because there is little habitation and the northern lights brilliantly contrasts with the dark sky. Thumbs you've succeeded!

Day 6 Kirkjubæjarklausturi - Reykjavik
Day 7 Reykjavik

Reykjavik offers lively shopping streets and modern entertainment venues. And if you are interested in Icelandic art and culture, you can visit the National Museum where the origins of Iceland are depicted. Or in the Reykjavik Art museum that is divided over three locations in Reykjavik. One is near the harbor, from the museum café you have a nice view. It is the place to be for young Icelandic artists.

The next morning our trip comes to an end.
