Day by day

Buenos Aires

Day 1 (Buenos Aires  Extension Hotel Recommended)
Day 2 Buenos Aires - Land Program begins, early A.M.
Day 3 Buenos Aires

We start in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. You will meet tour leader and the participants, arriving from Amsterdam, at our first hotel, where there will be a welcome meeting.

Buenos Aires is also called 'the Paris of South America' and that can be seen in the imposing (city) palaces, wide boulevards and large squares. Buenos Aires has thousands of cafés and restaurants, where you can get the most delicious sweets in between, and in the evening you can enjoy a real Argentinian steak. We have plenty of time to explore the city well.

You can take a tour by bike or bus with a guide or stroll through the streets yourself. In the districts of Palermo, Retiro and Recoleta you will find stately old houses in which the wealthy inhabitants live. In the south is San Telmo, one of the oldest districts, and the La Boca district, where the tango originated. A major attraction is Plaza de Mayo, with adjacent government building Casa Rosada, where Evita Perón addressed the population.

Foz do Iguaçu

Day 4 Buenos Aires - flight to Iguaçu
Day 5 Foz do Iguaçu, visit waterfalls Brazilian side
Day 6 Foz do Iguaçu, visit waterfalls Argentinian side - night bus to Bonito

We arrive in Foz do Iguaçu, a town cbordering three countries  Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil.

A short distance from the city are the impressive waterfalls of the Iguaçu River . They are not the highest, but the widest in the world: no less than 275 large and small waterfalls tumble down some eighty meters over a length of more than three kilometers. Many people think this is the most beautiful waterfall in the world. They can be admired from various points of view: from the Brazilian and Argentinian side and from a helicopter, the most beautiful but expensive way to admire this natural disaster. It is also possible to make a spectacular safari with jeeps and boats through the fairytale environment of the waterfalls surrounded by dense forests.

Not far from Foz, as the town is called by the local population, you can be guided around the Itaipu Dam , one of the largest dams in the world. This dam supplies electricity to a large part of Brazil and almost all of Paraguay. In the evening we leave with our own comfortable bus towards Bonito. It is a so-called 'semi-cama' bus, in which the seats are adjustable to a kind of 'half-bed'. That's how you get well-rested in the morning!

Bonito and the Pantanal

Day 7 arrival Bonito
Day 8 Bonito
Day 9 Bonito - Pantanal
Day 10 Pantanal
Day 11 Pantanal

The area around the village of Bonito is known for the special caves with deep blue water and crystal clear rivers and is a popular holiday destination for Brazilians. The rivers Sucuri and Rio da Prata are so clear that it looks like you're swimming around in an aquarium. The clarity of the water and the diversity of marine life amazes even the most experienced diver or snorkel. If you prefer to keep it dry, you can admire the protected Lago Azul cave. The cave itself is already beautiful to see because of the stalactite formations, but the clear blue lake gives the cave even more color and a mysterious look.

After enjoying the beautiful Bonito, the journey continues to the pristine Pantanal, one of the largest natural parks in the world. According to biologists, there are 600 bird species in this pristine nature reserve, such as ibises, parrots, kingfishers, storks and the tuiuiu, an impressive stork over one meter high with black head and red neck. This is the place to see all kinds of animals in their natural environment. Although ' pantanal ' is the Portuguese word for swamp, the Pantanal is not a real swamp, but it is an area that regularly overflows, making the landscape and ecosystem unique.

To see as much of the flora and fauna as possible, you can go out by boat, on foot or on horseback. During these trips you can see caimans lying sunbathing on the riverbeds. There are otters and snakes, and there are monkey families and impressive blue macaws in the trees. You may also encounter a capybara , the largest rodent in the world. Take binoculars with you so that you can view all birds and other animals. Also a flashlight should not be missing in your luggage, because we can also go out in the evening looking for other animals. The water in the nature reserve is often crystal clear; you see the fish swimming by and you can try to catch your own supper: fresh piranha!

In addition to breakfast, lunches and dinners are also served in this remote area. Furthermore, you can laze by the fazenda in a hammock in the garden or take a dip in the pool.

Colonial Paraty

Day 12 Pantanal - Campo Grande
Day 13 Campo Grando - flight to São Paulo - Paraty
Day 14 Paraty

After the Pantanal, the journey continues to Campo Grande, the state capital of Mato Grosso do Sul. We stay here the next morning to take a comfortable flight to São Paulo. Because of this flight we save a lot of time and in the afternoon we are already in the town of Paraty, where we can relax.

Paratyis a historic town in typical Portuguese colonial style, which serves as a starting point for shoe tours through the beautiful bay of the same name. The entire island is protected and large surfaces belong to the national park. Ilha Grande is an oasis of peace and has no roads, so large parts can only be reached on foot - and sometimes difficult -. You can thus make wonderful walks through largely untouched nature. The island has beautiful beaches and rugged mountains. Whoever wants to may explore the coastline by boat, especially the most beautiful beach in Brazil, 'Lopes Mendes'. The urban districts are separated by natural barriers, such as a forest between the northern and southern parts. This is the largest city forest in the world. You will also find a botanical garden in Rio with towering royal palms. In the center of the city, connected to Copacabana by a long tunnel and Ipanema, are some old colonial monuments such as the former imperial palace, the opera and the national library, but also the futuristic round cathedral.
